Labor Day is an opportunity to say thank you to the generations of American workers whose tireless efforts brought us the chance to celebrate this weekend. Their fights have given us a 40 hour work week, child labor laws, a minimum wage, workplace protections, and more. So, while we gather together with friends, and family, at a great BBQ, let’s take solace knowing we have rights as workers and strong Maine labor unions protecting those rights.
But more needs to be done. Nearly one in four workers and one in three working women are struggling to make ends meet on $7.50 an hour, in Maine. We need a livable wage. We can and should raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.
And we must ensure equal pay for equal work.
Thank you, and Happy Labor Day!
